Low Carbon Materials collaborates with Skanska to trial carbon-negative aggregate in a National Highways initiative.

Low Carbon Materials has been developing a carbon-negative aggregate for use in asphalt in order to decarbonise UK roads.
  • LCM has developed a carbon negative aggregate that enables the creation of net-zero asphalt.
  • The new product is entering the final phase of development in collaboration with Skanska.
  • The real-world application of this solution is a significant step forward for decarbonising UK roads.

Low Carbon Materials has been developing a carbon-negative aggregate for use in asphalt in order to decarbonise UK roads.

The innovative new product originated from a partnership between LCM and National Highways as part of the National Highways Accelerating Low Carbon Innovation Programme.

We are pleased to announce that Low Carbon Materials has been selected by National Highways to progress to Phase 2 of the programme, enabling accelerated testing of the aggregate and for its deployment in live trials.

National Highways Partnership

Earlier this year, Low Carbon Materials worked with National Highways and its Tier 1 suppliers with the goal of developing and introducing new low-carbon innovations into the road industry.

A key challenge for National Highways is to reduce emissions from cement, concrete, asphalt and steel by using alternative materials.

The development of our innovative carbon-negative aggregate addresses this challenge, as it can be easily added into asphalt mixes to achieve carbon-neutral asphalt.

Trialling commences

The successful development of our carbon-negative aggregate for asphalt has resulted in Low Carbon Materials advancing to the final stage of the innovation programme.

Low Carbon Materials is working with Skanska to trial the new aggregate in asphalt on a highway construction project delivered for National Highways.

This is a significant step forward for decarbonising the UK’s road’s. It signals the initial deployment of a solution, which, if adopted at scale, will help to reduce the emissions of new road construction and maintenance across the country.

Dr Lian Hutchings, Head of Growth at LCM, commented, “We are looking forward in the next few months to deploying this product widely across the road network and helping the road industry realise its net zero ambitions.”

Everyone at Low Carbon Materials is extremely proud of the continued success of this project and look forward to seeing this  new aggregate deployed in future  National Highways projects on the strategic road network.
