Highlights:

  • Low Carbon Materials (LCM) has been accepted for the groundbreaking Holcim accelerator alongside eight innovative companies.

  • The sixth-month programme will pair Sphera with partners from Aggregate Industries, Mott Macdonald, Bouygues and Sika.

  • OSTO – LCM’s carbon negative lightweight aggregate for concrete blocks offers a 100% reduction in embodied carbon.

What is the Holcim accelerator?

Holcim plans to lead the global construction sector to net zero, building progress for people and the planet. The Accelerator aims to move us further to that goal by ‘fostering innovation collaboration along the construction value chain.’

With over 400 applicants to choose from, 9 have been selected to join the program, offering mentoring, worldwide technical support, fantastic networking opportunities, and much more.

Each season of the accelerator consists of numerous challenges set by multiple country teams. The applicants can apply to present a location-based solution.

LCM’s work will support the UK’s challenge, which focuses on circular economy innovation. The UK partners are looking for a solution that maximises carbon reduction and cost value of used construction materials. They also aim to minimise waste and re-introduce it into our value chain with maximum impact.

Following LCM’s latest funding round, the accelerator will allow the growing team to showcase OSTO, Sphera’s carbon negative lightweight aggregate, to a global market and support with the development of new carbon-reducing aggregates. Sphera’s aggregates fit the UK’s theme by using circular economy techniques to recycle the unrecyclable, resulting in an embodied carbon reduction.

LCM's CEO and Co-Founder Dr. Natasha Boulding had this to say:

“I am excited that Low Carbon Materials has been selected as 1 of the 9 most innovative start-ups in the construction sector from across the globe to take part in the Holcim Accelerator! The expertise and resources available from the programme will catapult the business to the next level. We promise to always push the frontier of sustainable and scalable construction.”
